A new uniform tradition began with a design that tells the story of the 82nd Airborne Division. So far, the 10th Mountain Division and the 1st Infantry Division have also been awarded.

After the division is chosen, the first step in the process is to determine the timeline that will be respected. For the 82nd Airborne Division, it was World War II, and for the 1st Infantry Division, World War I took off on the 100th anniversary of the signing of the Armistice.
Next, the Nike designer, in collaboration with USMA's history department, begins to research and create the story that the uniform will tell.
"It's almost like a method actor preparing for a role," said Kristy Lauzonis, senior designer for Nike's college uniforms. "I go deeply human and research. I order books, I read everything I can under the sun, and then I start sending the history department back with all sorts of crazy questions."
With help from the History Department, Lauzonis reviews photos and artifacts from the chosen timeline and sets to work to create a uniform that tells the unit's history. Some features are predetermined by NCAA rules such as whether the uniforms are light or dark depending on whether it is home or away, but everything from the color of the features to the font is built from the ground up to make them historically accurate.

On the first uniform, the flag on the player's shoulder may face backwards to the casual observer, but it was positioned as it was worn during World War II. On the 10th Mountain uniform, the famous Pando Commando logo was not designed by Nike, but was a slightly used logo found during the research process. On last year's uniforms, the Black Lions were meant to tell the story of the 28th Infantry Division and the first major battle for American forces in World War I.
"I think one of the great things about historical fact is that you're going to have moments like that where you've done something that's 100% true and people don't know," Lauzonis said. "It's a bonus feature where everybody says the flag is backwards and we can say that was the flag's code and that's how it was worn on the uniform and we did it on purpose. corporate loops we flagged the wrong way. Throughout the process, the USMA History Department verifies the authenticity of the elements on the uniform and ensures that they accurately represent the history of the unit and the timeline depicted. "We provide historical context and of course Nike's designers are incredible," said Steve Waddell, assistant professor in the history department. "They have to interpret the concept of a historical idea to make it work with a real uniform and have the color contrast and everything works ... I'm a World War II historian and we did the 82nd Airborne for the first one. It's just nice that they connect the game of football and military history and military history is always popular."
